Report September 2015

                     1. Juvenile Justice Program “We are Just Like You”!

Our new school year began very actively. On this trip we had three events.

It was a short lesson on healthy lifestyle.  During the class the boys showed a high level of knowledge on the subject. And teens got an unusual homework assignment - to photograph how they spend their day at school. In addition, we gave the guys Rubik's Cube with a request to learn how to add it, because on one of our visits, we will hold a competition.

The leader of the program,  together with the Uni students held a fun athletics (running the 100 meters, pulling up on a crossbeam and dips). Pupils of schools have shown great athletic training, and even managed to win first place in the pull-ups and push-ups.

And, of course, the meeting ended with a football match. The teens won the game! We also had clowns with us who created a joyful mood.

2. The Program "Healthy Lifestyle"

Since the beginning of the month two schools decided to continue training sessions for pupils of the 6th and the 7th grades on the topic "I + others."

Also in one of the schools we conducted a lecture on violence for parents. The parents' meeting was attended by 100 people. Many questions came from the teachers on how to recognize and stop the violence.

It should be noted that the school administrations repeatedly offered to speak on aggression or violence, which shows the concern of the teaching staff on issues of violence at schools.

The Project "Stop HIV / AIDS"

In September we start the project "Stop HIV / AIDS." This year we have the opportunity to conduct classes for students of colleges, vocational schools and trade schools.

The purpose of the training sessions is the prevention of HIV infection among young people. The project is carried out in two stages. The first meeting is an interactive lecture and the second is the quest. All schools receive a set of teaching materials.  Planned 100 sessions in 10 educational settings of the city of Zaporizhzhye.

This month we have already held 38 sessions (20 lectures and 18 quests). Information is easily perceived by the students, with interest. During the lesson, the guys are active, they have no sense of embarrassment when discussing the topic. In general, the teens show sufficient awareness of the issue. The greatest difficulties were questions about HIV transmission. Many children have been assured that this virus is transmitted through a mosquito bite. They also did not know that HIV can be transmitted from mother to child.

Also in the classroom, we try to generate ideas about safe behavior of young people. It includes the questions of the delay the start of sexual activity.

To check the knowledge acquired during the lecture, the teens participate in the quest. The team that gains the most points gets gifts and sweet prizes.

At the end of the second session guys share their experiences. Here are some of their thoughts:

"I thought that there is only one route of transmission is sexual";

"We do not know what services do an HIV test";

"I thought that mosquitoes also carry the HIV virus. Now I'm  not afraid of them!".

In addition, we note a great interest of teachers!

Here are some of their statements:

"I'm so excited! As it turns out I did not know too much about HIV/ AIDS! "

"I did not know that through the breast milk you could get  HIV!"

                      2. The Program "Kangaroo"

During the month, 15 people attended the "Kangaroo" program.

There have been 4 individual consultations for parents. The program began to attend 2 new kids.

This month we organized the fourth seminar for parents of children with autism. The seminar was devoted to the development of speech. During the seminar we had a possibility to talk to a specialist on Skype.

In September, the staff of the "Kangaroo" participated in the seminar organized by the Ukrainian NGO “A Child with a Future” funded by the European Association "Autism in  Europe". In order to continue cooperation with these organizations we signed a cooperation agreement.

We also conducted a lecture for students of Zaporizhzhya National University. During the presentation we talk about our work with children with special needs.

In September, we continued classes in hippo therapy. Children continue with great enthusiasm to ride horses, to communicate with animals, feed it, and walk in the park.

This month we renewed the group sessions with music therapist - updated song repertoire. We also continued our good tradition of celebration of birthdays. Again we  had a pleasure to host our good friends – Clowns.

This month we stared a new project for children who do not attend our program. We have individual sessions with them.

Great joy for us was a gift from the teacher of the Zaporozhye National University, a small trampoline, where kids learn to jump.  Besides this a woman from Canada (92 years old!)  knitted hats and scarves for our children. Many thanks for such a necessary and valuable gifts!

Students volunteers helped us preparing decorations for the puppet theater, restored the books.

And special thanks we want to express to the Department of Social Pedagogy and Psychology of the National University for organizing the charity fair. All funds raised at the event were spent on the purchase of warm blankets for our kids!

                     4. Participation in Seminars and Conferences

15-16 September our staff attended a seminar of the Ukrainian Independent Center for Political Studies "How to influence the local authorities?" The purpose of the event is - to raise awareness of participants on the mechanisms of interaction between local authorities and public organizations.

                      5. Training of Specialists of Social Sphere

In September we  continued to work with the Balint’s groups. The participants are the heads of the programs for the elderly citizens. The group is actively involved in solving the problem of one of the clients and showed a high level of trust to each other.

Also this month, our experts gave a lecture for social workers  on love in old age, a lecture for teachers on the problem of communication and a lecture for the Master students on the role of a teacher.

                       6. Work With Foreign Specialists

In September we were visited by partners from the Mennonite Benevolent Society (Winnipeg, Canada). They discussed issues of further cooperation between the two organizations.
