Juvenile Justice Program «We are Just Like You!»

This month we visited the detention centre (so called school of social rehabilitation). The children were delighted to meet students again. This time in mini-lecture we have discussed the issues how to identify positive and negative features in a person. We saw that the guys easily named the negative features, and have had problems to identify the positive features. It turned out that the children could not name any person from whom they would like to take an example. So we discussed with them how to have friends with good qualities, what qualities should inherit a person and with whom to be friends with and with whom not.

During sports activities the boys actively compete with Uni students in volleyball, football, basketball and even Rugby! The children were especially impressed by the girls, who participated in all the games. Each team tried to win. At the end the pupils were awarded by T-shirts from a famous football club.

The "Kangaroo" Program

During the month, 12 people attended the "Kangaroo" program.

This month, students, volunteers continue to actively participate in the life of our center and special thanks to the volunteer students for their help in conducting games and fun with children.

On 5 October we were visited by our partners from AUCHAN hypermarket with good news - the "Kangaroo" won a grant from the Foundation de France for the sport equipment. In addition, the staff of the hypermarket brought our kids a big delicious cake, albums and pencils!

This month our kids visited the Children's railway. With great pleasure enjoyed to be passengers of the train. They also visited the Zoo located at the railway station.

Every morning group classes start with greetings. The children sit in a circle, hold hands, sing names of each other, exchanging positive emotions. Shy children in such training sessions become more relaxed.

This month continues swimming classes in a pool, group classes with a music therapist and individual sessions with a speech therapist.

We again were visited by our friends, the clowns, the children are always excited to see them.

This month also held a seminar for parents on the topic of inclusive education for children.  We invited to a meeting one of the parents whose child attends the 1st grade of the school with the Waldorf system of education.

A joyful event was the arrival of our Canadian colleagues, the founders of our center, Otto and Florence. We were very much pleased with the gifts: big bag of soft toys, kangaroos.

We want to celebrate the successes of our children: M. diversified diet, and increased willingness to engage with other children; A. began to eat; N. improved coordination of movement, due to the physical group and individual activities. V. learned to read the words consists of 3 letters. H. did some maths. D.  began to work following the instructions of the teacher. L. tells the children stories before bedtime.

Work with foreign specialists

In October the Mennonite cultural center (Molochansk) celebrated the 15th anniversary. In this regard, our partners Otto and Florence Driedger came to take part in the celebration. Mennonite organizations from Zaporizhzhya region spoke about the activities of their organizations. We also presented the activities of the "Florence Centre".

The Program "Healthy Lifestyle"

In October, we continued preparatory work for our new project on health issues. We started to work with parents and teachers to establish good working relationship, because the project will last 3 years. This implies teamwork: parent – teacher – Center "Florence" – children.  We reported that similar meetings will take place regularly.

We also began educational sessions for children. The first sessions was diagnostic. The aim was to identify the level of knowledge about healthy way of life. The children showed keen interest in the work and in the project in general. The trainers noted that many teens have a high level of knowledge about healthy way of life, but unfortunately not all apply theory in practice. For example, some children after the lesson, went out to smoke.

In addition, in all schools we continue to work in therapeutic groups for teachers.  Many teachers worry about the future of some of the students from disadvantaged families. The algorithm of work of the group was immediately understandable, so the work on each case was carried out efficiently. The teachers reported that they felt much better after the sessios.

The Project "I am Beautiful!"

In October, we continued classes for the project with the elderly. This time we discussed the topic of positive thinking, conflicts, and ways out.
