Report June 2012

1. Program "Kangaroo"

The "Kangaroo" program provides an early intervention of children with the following nosologies: cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, autism, mental retardation,  hyperactivity, hydrocephalus.

In June children have participated in a celebration of the holiday "Protection of Children’s Rights”. Our children attended a performance at a theater, and then a children's cafe. In the theater, the children were very organized, behaved well,  understood what was happening around them. They have participated in all competitions before the performance, watched the performance with great interest and could concentrate their attention though the performance lasted for 40 minutes. In the café children sat by themselves at the tables, used cutlery, were very careful, and after the meal played with animator  various games.

This is exactly what we wanted. We can say that one of the goals was achieved. Children are socialized, they know the rules of behavior in public, they know the rules of table manners, and most importantly, we see that that our children are not too much different from the ‘normal’ children. On the contrary, kids from "Kangaroo" were so much better organized than healthy children.

2. Students’ practicum

From the 11th till the 23rd of June we hosted freshmen major "Social Work" from Zaporizhzhya National University. Students got the information about the activities of the Florence Centre, its structure, programs and projects. The main task of the practicum was to create a database of NGO’s and government organizations that provide services to the communities in  Zaporizhzhya.  In two weeks the guys have visited more than 15 organizations, found out the features of their work, staff, types of customers, services, costs. After that, all the information was included in the directory. In the future we plan to print and distribute the information to customers and partners of the Florence Centre.

We were especially pleased to see how students worked as a team. They demonstrated a high degree of professional commitment and independence in carrying out assignments. During the feedback they shared that it was a great experience, which made it possible to understand the peculiarities of social work: "Having seen the work of various organizations, I just realized that I have chosen the right profession. Helping people is so wonderful! "(Lily P.)" For me, this practice was very useful, I saw so many different organizations. Now I know exactly what a social worker has to do "(Dmitry B.).

3. Program "Healthy Generation"

In June we have developed and made a design of  informational brochures on the projects "Healthy Generation" and "Training Workshop". Brochures will be distributed to the schools of the city, and posted on our website.

4.  "We are just like you!" (work at the detention centre)

This month volunteers from the Institute of Management and Law (Zaporizhzhya National Technical University, major "International tourism") and the School of Economic (Zaporizhzhya National University, major "Social Work") visited detention centre.

For the guys was conducted  a "tourist ferry", where everyone can feel a real tourist! Everyone really liked the "tourist ferry." And, of course, the meeting ended with a football match!

5. Family Club "Just a Miracle!"

On May 24th a new set of sessions started , two family couples are currently engaged.

The first session was marked by a comfortable cozy atmosphere that allows everybody to feel calm. All participants are actively involved in the work, eager to learn practical techniques and new information. Also parents note the atmosphere of openness and trust during sessions, as well as an active interest in the material under discussion.

After each session the interim results are summarized, and feedback obtained from participants.  On this basis and also with consideration of actual needs of participants the necessary adjustments are made into the content of next sessions.
